How will Virat’s absence affect India’s chances in Asia Cup 2018

It will be interesting to see whether India, the defending champion, is able to repeat their performance in this year’s Asia Cup as well.

Interestingly most of the Indian players look in a scintillating form including the likes of Rohit Sharma (the skipper), Shikhar Dhawan, not to mention veteran M.S. Dhoni as well. The pace department looks quite sharp and it is spearheaded by Bhuvneshwar Kumar as well as Jasprit Bumrah. The backups will be in the form of Umesh Yadav, Siddharth Kaul, Shardul Thakur, and Deepak Chahar all of whom can deliver the goods when needed. Again, the spin attack will consist of Kuldeep Yadav plus Yuzuvendra Chahal both of whom have loads of experience behind them. The role of the all-rounder will be performed by Hardik Pandya who can win any match single-handedly.

However, the absence of the regular skipper Virat Kohli is not very good news for the Indian contingent in this version of Asia Cup. Without his services, it can be rightly asserted that the men in blues are a bit weakened at least in the batting department. In fact, only time will tell how much his absence will affect the Indian side.

There are several decent batters that can fill in the vacant spot of Kohli in the middle order including Ambati Raidu, Suresh Raina, KL Rahul, and so on. Below we will take a look at how these players might fare in the absence of Virat.

KL Rahul:

Rahul has featured in only 12 matches with a century under his belt in the opening match. Apart from this, he has likewise scored a fifty too. Interestingly, he played both these innings as an opening batsman. On the contrary, his overall performance in the middle order is not that great. Moreover, he lacks the basic qualities of the middle order batsman in the 50 overs format. Rather, Rahul should find a place in the team as a backup opener.

Ambati Raidu

This is the guy on whom India can bank on in the absence of Virat. His scores in the last 5 innings were 41*, 62*, 41, 124* and 49* which will definitely help to justify his position as a middle order batsman. Having an outstanding IPL season, probably Raidu will be donning the Indian colors in this year’s Asia Cup as a middle order batter.

Suresh Raina

The main forte of this guy is his vast experience than anything else. If the Indian think tank wants to go for experience, then Raina is obviously the right choice. Apart from being a decent batsman, Suresh is likewise an extremely agile fielder who can bowl a bit as well.

Kedar Jadhav

This gifted middle-order batsman has the distinction of scoring 798 runs in only 40 matches at a decent average of 39.90. He has also struck a couple of centuries plus 3 fifties. His strike rate is 109 which is simply incredible. Moreover, Jadhav has taken 16 wickets at an average of 32 which is OK for a part-timer. Therefore, he is another middle order batsman who can propel India to the finals in the absence of Virat.
